Subject: IRPA Strategic Programme for 2016-2020 and IRPA new release : Guidance on Implementation of Eye Dose Monitoring and Eye Protection of Workers

Dear Associate Societies,

You will find enclosed IRPA Strategic Programme for 2016-2020 as finalised by the Executive Council Members during the November 2016 EC meeting held in Madrid.

This document sets out the way forward for the IRPA Executive Council (EC) to lead the development of IRPA over the current four-year cycle up to IRPA15 International Congress in Seoul in 2020 and takes full account of:

·         the discussions at the Associated Societies Forum (ASF) during the 2016 IRPA14 Congress in Cape Town,

·         the views and priorities of the AS as presented in the 50th Anniversary posters at the Congress,

·         and AS views expressed during the IRPA AS Questionnaire exercise.

An essential element is also ensuring continuity with the strategy developed in the previous EC period, although with some re-emphasis of priorities.

We are also pleased to send you herewith the finalized version “IRPA Guidance on Implementation of Eye Dose Monitoring and Eye Protection of Workers”, representing IRPA’s new publication, after ‘IRPA’s guiding principles on radiation safety culture’ in 2014.

As you know, the International Commission on Radiological Protection revised its eye dose threshold for cataract induction in April 2011, specifying a limit of 0.5 Gy, compared with the previous threshold doses for visual-impairing cataracts of 5 Gy for acute exposures and > 8 Gy for highly fractionated ones.

Further, ICRP recommended a reduction in the equivalent dose limit for occupational exposure in planned exposure situations for the lens of the eye from 150 mSv to 20 mSv in a year, averaged over defined periods of 5 years, with no dose in a single year to exceed 50 mSv. This revised dose limit is incorporated into IAEA International Basic Safety Standards, and into the Council Directive Euratom which must be implemented by the Member States by February 2018. The new IRPA Guidance accounts for previously published ICRP thresholds.

Both documents have just been posted on our website.

Hoping that these new documents will be a valuable tool for IRPA in the future, we wish you a pleasant reading.

Best regards

Dr. Bernard le GuenMD, PhD
